On 11 March, Bharatiya Janata Party secured a historic mandate in Uttar Pradesh without projecting anyone as the party’s chief ministerial face. For a week, there was speculation in media over several names, including that of Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Manoj Sinha and Keshav Prasad Maurya as probables for the CM’s chair.
However, on 18 March, with huge hype whipped up online and live television news as the party seniors deliberated over the move. Finally, BJP named Yogi Adityanath as the Chief Minister and laid all speculation to rest..
The saffron leader has been a Member of Parliament in five consecutive Lok Sabhas from 1998 to 2014. He is also the current Mahant (head priest) of Gorakhnath Mutt.
Adityanath, a Thakur (Kshatriya) by birth, has been a controversial figure in Uttar Pradesh politics and and has considerable influence in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. He was also the founder of Hindu Yuva Vahini, a right wing organisation with considerable popularity.
Adityanath will take oath as Chief Minister on Sunday.
